Pressing START/STOP or PHOTO does not record images.
  • The playback screen is displayed. Stop playback, and select [Shooting Mode] [ Movie] or [ Photo].

  • Your camcorder is recording the image you have just shot on the recording media. You cannot make new recording during this period.

  • The recording media is full. Delete unnecessary images. [Details]

  • Total number of movie scenes or photos exceeds the recordable capacity of your camcorder [Details][Details]. Delete unnecessary images [Details].

Photos cannot be recorded.
  • You cannot record photos together with:

  • [Fader]

  • The camcorder cannot shoot photos while it is in the movie recording mode, depending on the [REC Mode] or [Frame Rate] selected.

The access lamp remains lit or flashing even if recording has stopped.
  • Your camcorder is recording the scene you have just shot on the memory card.

The imaging field looks different.
  • The imaging field may look different depending on the condition of your camcorder. This is not a malfunction.

The actual recording time for movies is less than the expected recording time of the recording media.
  • Depending on the recording conditions, the time available for recording may be shorter, for example when recording a fast moving object, etc.

The camcorder stops operating.
  • If you keep applying vibration on the camcorder, recording may stop.

There is a slight time lag between the moment when START/STOP is pressed and the actual movie recording starts or stops.
  • On your camcorder, there may be a slight time difference between the moment when you press START/STOP and when the actual movie recording starts/stops. This is not a malfunction.

The horizontal to vertical ratio of the movie (16:9 (wide)/4:3) cannot be changed.
  • The horizontal to vertical ratio of high definition image quality (HD) movies and MP4 movies are 16:9 (wide).

The auto focus does not function.
  • The recording conditions are not suitable for auto focus. Adjust the focus manually. [Details]

SteadyShot does not function.
  • Set [SteadyShot] to [Active] or [Standard] [Details], [SteadyShot] to [On] (HDR-CX280/ CX280E/ CX290/ CX290E/ CX320/ CX320E/ CX380/ CX380E/ CX390E/ PJ320E/ PJ380/ PJ380E/ PJ390E) [Details].

  • Even if [SteadyShot] is set to [Active] or [Standard], [SteadyShot] to [On] (HDR-CX280/ CX280E/ CX290/ CX290E/ CX320/ CX320E/ CX380/ CX380E/ CX390E/ PJ320E/ PJ380/ PJ380E/ PJ390E), your camcorder may not be able to compensate for excessive vibrations.

Images cannot be recorded or played back correctly.
  • If you record and delete images repeatedly for a long time, the files on the recording media may become fragmented and images cannot be recorded or played back correctly. After backing up the images on other media, format the recording media on your camcorder. [Details]

The subjects passing across the camcorder very fast appear crooked.
  • This is called the focal plane phenomenon. This is not a malfunction. Because of the way the image device (CMOS sensor) reads out image signals, the subjects passing by the lens rapidly might appear crooked depending on the recording conditions.

Horizontal stripes appear on the images.
  • This occurs when recording images under a fluorescent lamp, sodium lamp, or mercury lamp. This is not a malfunction.

Black bands appear when you record a TV screen or computer screen.
  • Set [SteadyShot] to an option except for [Active]. [Details]

LCD brightness cannot be set.
  • You cannot set LCD brightness when:

  • The LCD panel is closed on your camcorder with the LCD screen facing out.

  • The power is supplied from the AC Adaptor (models with an AC Adaptor).

Sound is not recorded correctly (models with the MIC input jack).
  • If you connect or disconnect an external microphone, etc. while recording movies, the sound may not be recorded correctly. The sound will be recorded correctly by restoring the microphone connection at the start of movie recording.

Photos are recorded automatically.
  • In the default setting, photos are recorded automatically when the camcorder detects a smile ([Smile Shutter]). [Details]
