Bright Monitoring

still image

When shooting still images, you can check the composition in the viewfinder/monitor even if the subject is dark, such as when shooting the night sky. You can also use autofocus while performing [Bright Monitoring].

  1. MENU (Shooting) → [Shooting Display][Bright Monitoring][On].
  2. Move to [Live View Brightness] or [AF Range] by pressing the right side of the control wheel, and then select the desired setting.

Menu item details

On:
Uses the [Bright Monitoring] function.
Live View Brightness: Sets the brightness of the viewfinder/monitor live view to make it easier to check the composition even in dark locations. ([Bright]/[Brighter])
AF Range: Sets the range in which autofocus operates when performing [Bright Monitoring]. ([All Range]/[Long-distance])
  • When shooting distant subjects such as landscapes, setting [AF Range] to [Long-distance] may reduce the time to achieve focus.
  • When [AF Range] is set to [Long-distance], the autofocus range and the time to achieve focus will vary depending on the lens used or the focal length.
Off:
Does not use the [Bright Monitoring] function.

Hint

  • The [Live View Brightness] icons are displayed as follows.
    • Bright:
    • Brighter:
  • If you assign [Bright Monitoring] to the desired key using [Custom Key/Dial Set.], you can toggle [Bright Monitoring] between [On] and [Off] each time you press the assigned key.
  • When autofocus is executed during [Bright Monitoring], “Executing AF…” is displayed on the screen. Continue to perform focusing operations such as pressing the shutter button halfway down until autofocus is complete.
  • When [AF Range] is set to [Long-distance], the autofocus operating range and an estimate of the time to achieve focus are displayed on the screen. If the brightness of the subject changes, the estimated time to achieve focus may change.

Note

  • During [Bright Monitoring], [Live View Display] is automatically locked to [Setting Effect OFF], and settings such as exposure compensation are not reflected in the live view display. It is recommended that you use [Bright Monitoring] only in dark locations.
  • In a bright environment, if you set [Live View Brightness] to [Brighter], the image may be displayed brighter than the appropriate brightness.
  • The setting for [Bright Monitoring] is retained even when the camera is turned off.
  • When [Bright Monitoring] is set to [On], the settings for the following functions will be automatically changed or the functions will become unavailable.
    • Live View Display
    • Anti-flicker Shoot.
    • Var. Shutter
    • Monitor Low Bright
    • Viewfinder Low Bright
    • Monitor Disp Quality
    • VF Display Quality
    • Touch Shutter / Touch Tracking / Touch function icon for still image shooting
  • [Bright Monitoring] is unavailable in the following situations:
    • When [Focus Mode] is set to [Automatic AF] or [Continuous AF]

*When a mount adaptor is attached, [Bright Monitoring] can only be used with [Manual Focus].

    • When the shooting mode is set to [Intelligent Auto]
    • When [Interval Shooting] is set to [On]
    • While [Face Memory] is in use
    • While [Shot. Result Preview] is in use
    • When [Drive Mode] is set to [Focus Bracket]
    • When [Finder Frame Rate] is set to [High]
  • [Bright Monitoring] cannot be switched to [On] or [Off] under the following conditions.
    • While [Auto Magnifier in MF] is in use
    • While autofocusing is activated
    • While [Aperture Preview] is in use
    • While streaming
    • During pre-capturing
    • During the countdown for the self-timer
  • Depending on the shooting environment, the following situations may occur when [Bright Monitoring] is performed. These situations are more likely to occur when [Live View Brightness] is set to [Brighter] than when it is set to [Bright].
    • The shutter speed becomes slower than normal.
    • The updating speed of the display becomes slower.
    • The exposure changes or takes time to change due to the expansion of the metered brightness range.
    • Noise becomes noticeable.
  • When performing [Bright Monitoring], it may take some time to achieve focus in dark environments.
  • If you set [AF Range] to [Long-distance], the camera will not be able to focus on subjects outside the autofocus range.
  • Even if [AF Range] is set to [Long-distance], the camera may focus on a subject near the shortest side of the autofocus range.
  • The displayed time to achieve focus when [AF Range] is set to [Long-distance] is an estimate and may differ from the actual time to achieve focus.
  • When a lens equipped with a focus range limiter is attached, auto-focusing is executed within the range where the autofocus range set by the lens and the autofocus range set in [AF Range] under [Bright Monitoring] overlap. If there is no overlapping range, auto-focusing will be unavailable.
