Electronic Shutter:
Shoot with the electronic shutter only.

Characteristics and usages of the different shutter types

[Mechanical Shutter] and [Electronic Shutter] each have the following characteristics. Select a shutter type according to the shooting conditions.

Electronic Shutter

Allows you to shoot at a faster shutter speed than [Mechanical Shutter]. Using a high shutter speed can prevent overexposure when you shoot with a small F-number in bright environments, such as outside in bright sunlight, on a beach, or on a snowy mountain.

However, the captured image may be affected in the cases described below. In such cases, we recommend shooting with [Mechanical Shutter].

  • When shooting at fast shutter speeds under momentary light sources (such as flashes from other cameras) or under indoor fluorescent or LED lighting, banding-like shading may appear in the captured image due to lighting flicker.
  • With [Electronic Shutter], exposure is performed sequentially from the top to the bottom of the screen, which may cause distortion in the captured image depending on subject movement or camera movement.

Mechanical Shutter

By using leaf shutters, [Mechanical Shutter] on this camera produces less operating sound than the focal plane shutters used in interchangeable lens cameras. When shooting in a quiet environment, we recommend setting [Audio Signal(Shooting)] to [Off] to reduce sounds to just the faint sound of shutter operation.

Because [Mechanical Shutter] on this camera has only small differences in exposure timing according to the position within the image, you can shoot fast-moving subjects with minimal distortion. No flickering or band-like shading will occur.

Note

  • When [RAW File Type] is set to [Lossless Comp], [Shutter Type] becomes locked to [Mechanical Shutter].
  • In rare cases, the shutter sound may be produced when the power is turned off even if the [Shutter Type] is set to [Electronic Shutter]. However, this is not a malfunction.
  • When [Shutter Type] is set to [Electronic Shutter], the following functions are not available:
    • Flash shooting
    • Long Exposure NR
    • BULB shooting
