Adjusting the Focus Automatically

The unit achieves fast, highly accurate, and consistent auto focus using phase detection AF only.

When [Shooting] – [Focus] – [Lens Action If Cannot AF] is set to [Continue Focus Search] in the full menu, the unit also uses contrast detection AF in addition to phase detection AF, which allows the unit to continue auto focus operation using contrast detection AF in conditions and environments where phase detection AF cannot operate.

To adjust the focus automatically, set [Shooting] – [Focus] – [Focus Operation] to [Auto Focus] in the full menu.

If the lens has a focus switch, set it to “AF/MF” or “AF” beforehand. If set to “Full MF” or “MF,” the lens will not accept focus commands from the unit.

Hint

  • When [Shooting] – [Focus] – [AF Assist] is set to [On] in the full menu, you can still use the focus ring of the lens during auto focus to adjust the focus. When you stop operating the focus ring, the unit will focus on the subject closest to the current focus position according to the [Subject Recognition AF] setting.

Note

  • A lens that supports auto focus is required.
  • Accuracy may not be obtained depending on the shooting conditions.
  • When a lens that does not support on-sensor phase detection AF is attached, setting [Shooting] – [Focus] – [Lens Action If Cannot AF] to [Stop Focus Search] will set focusing to manual focus (fixed).
